Instagram, Messenger & WhatsApp (Meta AI): AI settings for parents

Meta AI is built into Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and WhatsApp. You can't switch it off for teens, but you can see topics and tighten content.

Can a parent turn it off? Partly

Partly. You cannot turn off the Meta AI assistant for your teen. If you set up supervision, you can see the topics they ask Meta AI about. In the Meta AI app, you can also switch them to a stricter “Limited Content” setting.

What the AI feature is

Meta AI is a chatbot built into Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and it also has its own Meta AI app. It shows up in search bars and chats. Meta also had “AI characters”, chatbots with made-up personalities.

Age rules

Step by step

Set up supervision (Instagram, Facebook, Messenger)

  1. Go to familycenter.meta.com/supervision.
  2. Follow the steps to send your teen an invite. Your teen can also send you one.
  3. You both have to accept. Teens must be 13 to 17, and only one parent can supervise each teen.

  1. Meta AI shows up as a colored ring (circle) icon in the Chats tab, and you can @mention it in chats.
  2. News sites report a setting under Settings → Chats and a chat-level “Advanced Chat Privacy” option that limits Meta AI in a chat.
