TikTok: AI settings for parents
AI video tools and lots of AI-made videos. A slider to see less AI content is still being tested.
Can a parent turn it off? Partly
Partly. TikTok is testing a setting to see less AI-made content in the For You feed. Parents can use Family Pairing for screen time and keyword filters, but there's no switch for AI tools.
What the AI feature is
TikTok has AI creation tools, such as AI Alive, which turns photos into short videos, and AI Self, which makes an AI version of you from selfies. Many videos in the feed are also made with AI. TikTok labels some of them.
Age rules
- TikTok is for ages 13 and up.
- Teens 13 to 17 get a 60-minute daily limit by default, private accounts, and no night-time notifications.
- Teens under 16 can't send direct messages, and their videos don't show up in For You.
Step by step
See less AI-made content (being tested)Not confirmed
- Go to Profile, tap the menu, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Content preferences, then Manage topics.
- Move the AI-generated content slider toward less.
TikTok says this is a test and it may not show on every account. TikTok's help page wouldn't load for us, so the buttons aren't confirmed.

What parents should know
- TikTok's keyword filters can hide videos whose descriptions mention words you choose, such as “AI”.
- TikTok requires creators to label realistic AI videos, and it adds labels itself. Not every AI video gets caught.
- Through Family Pairing, parents can see the topic choices their teen made in Manage topics, according to TikTok.
