YouTube & YouTube Kids: AI settings for parents
“Ask YouTube” AI isn't on YouTube Kids or supervised kid accounts. YouTube also uses AI to guess if a viewer is under 18.
Can a parent turn it off? Partly
Partly. There's no parent switch for Ask YouTube on a teen's own account. For kids under 13, using YouTube Kids or a supervised account keeps Ask YouTube away.
What the AI feature is
“Ask YouTube” is an AI helper under some videos. It answers questions about the video and suggests other videos. YouTube also uses AI to estimate whether a viewer is under 18, and gives them teen protections if so.
Age rules
- Ask YouTube is only for signed-in users aged 13 and up (or the age where you live).
- Ask YouTube is not available for supervised kid accounts or in the YouTube Kids app.
- Supervised kid accounts on regular YouTube are for children under 13.
Step by step
Kids under 13: use YouTube Kids or a supervised account
- Set up YouTube Kids, or a supervised kid account on regular YouTube, from your Google parent account.
- Pick a content setting that fits your child's age.
- Ask YouTube is not offered on either one.

What parents should know
- YouTube says it keeps Ask YouTube chats for 45 days. Human reviewers may read some of them after removing the account details.
- Teens 13 and up who sign in to their own account can see Ask YouTube on some videos.
- Supervised accounts also turn off comments, live chat, and some other features.
